    Itinerary

    Rome

Rome is an historic city and capital of Italy, located in the region of Lazio. Rome is ubicated in the central portion of the Italian peninsula, on the Tevere River about 24 km inland from the Tyrrhenian Sea. Once the capital of an ancient republic and empire whose armies and politics defined the Western world in antiquity and left seemingly indelible imprints thereafter, the spiritual and physical seat of the Roman Catholic Church, and the site of major pinnacles of artistic and intellectual achievement, Rome is the Eternal City, remaining today a political capital, a religious centre, and a memorial to the creative imagination of the past.

Rome homes some of the most important monuments of the world, such as the Colosseum, even known as THE main monument in Rome, the one everyone visits and the most evocative of the city, built during the last decades of the I century AD and inaugurated by Emperor Titus in 80 AD, it is the biggest Roman amphitheater anywhere in the world and it has worked for centuries as a theater and stadium, hosting gladiator games, hunts and theatrical representations. Its location is also very close to two other points of interest of this amazing city that are also woth visiting, the Roman Forum and the “Altare della Patria”.

Another place that deserves to be visited is the world famous Trevi Fountain, one of the most beautiful fountains in Rome and the most famous. Built in the XVIII century following a design of architect Nicola Salvi, it is located in a small and otherwise understated small square in Rome city center (Piazza di Trevi) and it an imposing, impressive sight. At walking distance from the Trevi Fountai you can find the stunning Spanish Steps, a monumental staircase of 136 steps that connects Piazza di Spagna with Trinita’ dei Monti, the double towered church on the hill above it. The monumental staircase was built in 1723-1725 and is stunning and unique especially in spring, when it usually gets decorated with blooming flowers.

Of course these are just some of the many beauties of this amazing city, which we guarantee will be engraved in your hearts and minds for years to come.

    Vatican City

Located on the banks of the Tiber River, on a hill is the Vatican City. It is a place that has one of the richest histories in the world and is one of the most influential. The religious history surrounding Vatican City spans the centuries and is today the embodiment of many of the most important parts of Rome’s cultural history.

Vatican City is home to the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church. There you will find the central government of the Church, the Bishop of Rome, otherwise known as the Pope, and the College of Cardinals.

Every year millions and millions of people travel to Vatican City, mainly to see the Pope but also to worship in St. Peter’s Basilica and to see the marvels preserved in the Vatican Museums.

Technically speaking, Vatican City is a state, an independent city-state and is the smallest in the whole world. The political body of Vatican City is governed by the Pope but, and not everyone knows it, he is many, many years younger than the Church.

However, the roots of the Vatican City go back much further. In fact, we can trace them all the way back to the 1st century AD when the Catholic Church was founded. Between the 9th and 10th centuries up until the Renaissance period, the Catholic Church was at the height of its power, politically speaking. The Popes gradually assumed more and more governing power, eventually ruling all the regions surrounding Rome.

The Papal State was responsible for the government of Central Italy until the unification of Italy, almost a thousand years of rule. For much of this time, after their return to the city in 1377 after a 58-year exile in France, the reigning Popes will reside in one of Rome’s many palaces. When the time came for the unification of Italy, the popes refused to recognize that the Italian king had the right to rule and refused to leave the Vatican. This ended in 1929.

Today Vatican City remains a religious and historical landmark, as important today as it was then. It receives millions of visitors from all over the world, visitors who come to see the beauty of the city, absorb its history and culture, and express their faith in the Catholic Church.

However, the influence and power of Vatican City did not remain in the past. It is the center, the heart, of the Catholic Church, and as such, as Catholicism is still one of the largest religions in the entire world, it remains a highly influential and visible presence in the world today.

Even with the strict dress code, the beautiful architecture that is St. Peter’s Basilica, and the religious significance of the Pope, Vatican City has become one of the world’s most popular destinations for travellers. It is the embodiment of some of the most significant parts of both Western and Italian history, opening a window into the past, a past that lives on today.
